Link: How to install XAMPP + enable GUI on Linux (Ubuntu)

Check out these links if you’re trying to install XAMPP/LAMPP on Ubuntu with a simple GUI to start and stop it:

  1. Installing XAMPP: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html (download the tar.gz, extract to /opt — XAMPP is now installed)
  2. Run the two commands here: http://freshtutorial.com/add-gui-xampp-control-panel-ubuntu/ to create a desktop entry / shortcut launcher for the GUI that comes with XAMPP.
  3. Run sudo chmod +x ~/.local/share/applications/xampp-control-panel.desktop (thanks to http://bhargavg.wordpress.com/2011/12/18/xampp-control-panel-gui-in-ubuntu/ for this tip; my launcher wouldn’t work until I ran this command.
  4. Now if you’re using Ubuntu w/ Unity, hit the Super key to bring up the app/file/places search interface, start typing “xampp” and you should see a grey plug icon with XAMPP Control Panel underneath. You can run this, drag it to your unity launcher bar, etc.

The XAMPP control panel looks like this, as of this writing:

Just wanted to point this out, as the GUI will for some be more convenient than the command line way:

/opt/lampp/lampp start
/opt/lampp/lampp stop
